Oak trees are a group of hardwood trees that belong to the genus Quercus and the beech family, Fagaceae. All types of oak trees are categorized into two groups: white oak trees, and red oak trees. To identify the type of oak tree, you need to look at its bark, leaves, acorns and its general shape.


How to identify different oak trees.

Oak trees belong to the genus Quercus meaning "fine tree" in Latin. They are native to the northern hemisphere and consist of some 600 species. Oak trees are unique because of their fruit, the acorn, which is key in identifying oak species. They are known for being multi-trunked and growing wide canopies with sprawling, scraggly branches.

Bark. These oak trees have a very deep gray bark with shaped plates and ridges. Leaves. Southern red oaks will have narrow leaves that have deep lobes and very large gaps between the lobes. Eastern White Oak Trees. The Botanical Name of the Eastern White Oak tree is Quercus Alba. These trees are so massive and can have a growth upto 100 ft. Eastern White Oak is called white Oaks since they have white hardwood. The bark of Eastern White Oak has a light grayish color with small and slight fissures.

The red oak ( Quercus rubra) is a broadleaved deciduous tree that grows 60 to 90 ft. (18 - 28 m). The stately tree has a spreading crown with an irregular shape growing up to 75 ft. (22 m) wide. Red oaks have trunks measuring 1.6 to 3.2 ft. (0.5 - 1 m) wide, with some specimens measuring over 6 ft. (2 m) in diameter.

The oldest of these trees can be found with trunks over 5 feet in diameter. The largest and oldest valley oaks can reach heights of 150 feet and diameters of 8 feet, making them one of the largest species of tree in California. Large clusters of valley oaks live in the Bay Area and central California. 6. Engelmann Oak.


Oak Bark

The black oak is a large deciduous tree native to most of the United States east of the Great Plains. The species gets its name from its bark, which turns almost completely black with rough ridges.
