My wife and I were assigned to the Babenhausen-Darmstadt-Aschaffenburg area on a DA directed Joint Domicile assignment in September 1977. My wife went to 440th Sig n in Darmstadt (Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne) and I went to the 2/83 in Babenhausen. This area was the "place" for married officer couples on Joint Domicile.

The beginnings of the Babenhausen Kaserne or barracks reaches all the way back to the year 1900. Prior to this year, three squadrons of the Red Dragoons had headquartered in Babenhausen, but they left in 1891.. The United States shared the running of this with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and this continued.

I was stationed at babenhausen kaserne from 1986-1988. Our battalion 2/77 was a new unit. We had new barracks, motor pool, and HQ's. They built a new mess hall also, it was for the entire base. Other new facillaties added during my stay PX, burger king, rec center, medical center, and few other things. I really enjoyed my time there.
