Most people know a bat when they see one: It looks something like a mouse with wings. There are about 18 families of bats globally, but only one family of bats predominates in Missouri: the evening bats (Vespertilionidae). The bats in our state are all relatively small, usually with prominent ears. If you want to be able to identify bats to species, it is good to know some basic bat anatomy.

His Photo Trap allows me to capture the nightlife of owls and bats and has many other uses as well. For example, I am in the process of setting up the trap at night at a water hole where I can capture Bobcats, coyote, Ringtail Cat and Javalina. In the area I'm working there is a good possibility of filming a Mountain Lion as well.

I adjust the ISO manually as needed. I always keep the camera on Auto Focus when photographing bats. This way I don't miss a shot. You can either shoot your pictures in RAW or in JPG. If you are going to be making a lot of adjustments to your photos or sending them off for printing, use JPG shooting and save yourself time later in Photoshop.

In theory, the simplest way to photograph bats in flight is to illuminate them solely using flash, whilst the shutter is held open on a long exposure. To achieve this, I operated the camera in continuous shooting mode, with shutter speeds of between 20 and 60 seconds (depending on how many bats I was expecting).
