He died on October 3, 1226. In 1228, he was declared a saint by Pope Gregory IX and the following day, the foundation stone for the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi was laid. St. Francis was buried in a tomb under this basilica and the tomb can be visited while in Assisi.

Praticamente Noi vediamo oggi la stessa chiesa come fu costruita nel 1166, in un'epoca in cui San Francesco non era ancora nato.
