GUNNERY SERGEANT JOHN BASILONE, USMC (DECEASED) Medal of Honor Citation Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, of Raritan, New Jersey, was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his outstanding heroism at Guadalcanal. Later, during the Iwo Jima campaign, he was killed in action on D-Day, 19 February 1945.

John Basilone awarded the Medal of Honor 1943. During Oct. 24-25 in 1942, the Marines faced a frontal assault from over 3,000 Japanese troops of the Sendai Division. The Japanese, probably World War II's best jungle fighters, attacked in typical Samurai fashion. The troops regarded death in battle as something to aspire to, not fear.
